Set in a cabaret environment at The Flamingo Hotel (75-100 seat capacity theater), Wayne Newton's 'Up Close and Personal' 90-minute show is what any fan would want from such a legendary Las Vegas entertainer - at 80 years young. Backed by a 3-piece band (guitar, drums and piano), Mr. Newton performs a variety of songs which should be familiar to anyone in attendance. Unfortunately, the sound mixer did not have Mr. Newton's microphone above the music, so it was challenging to hear him over the music at the beginning of the show. That mistake was eventually corrected. In addition, archived footage of performing with his older brother (while living in Arizona), as well as during his solo career, concert goers are treated to a well thought out and personally satisfying concert. Mr. Newton comes to life when he plays three (3) different instruments during the show. In reality, he knows how to play 13 instruments in total (all self taught). Mr. Newton represents the traditional Las Vegas performer - telling jokes, quick with the humorous one-liners, as well as sharing personal stories from his own storied career. By the audience's response, the 'behind the scenes' stories Mr. Newton shared had a great effect on the people in the cabaret theater setting. Mr. Newton also took time to honor those in the audience who served in the military (past and present), as well as front line responders.
